  • Pilot Scale Freeze Drying without the Price Tag

Benchtop freeze dryers are often used for small scale freeze drying or research and development projects. The choice is sometimes driven more by budget than capacity requirements. What if you need a freeze dryer that is bigger than a benchtop but without the pilot scale price tag? Benchtop freeze dryers are not usually chosen for their capaciousness. LyoDry Benchtop freeze dryers have a 5Kg ice condenser capacity. This means that they will process up to a maximum of 5Kg of the ice that is created from the product moisture, per batch. They are often used with an acrylic chamber and tray accessory for bulk freeze drying. But if you really need a larger freeze dryer, without paying automated pilot scale freeze dryer prices, the LyoDry range of freeze dryers includes more attainable options, such as the LyoDry Midi and LyoDry Midi Pro. The LyoDry Midi freeze dryer condenser is free standing and designed to fit beside a standard laboratory bench (the footprint is analogous to a washing machine, rather than a microwave). The LyoDry Midi has an 18Kg ice condenser capacity, which is useful if you're freeze drying a very wet product and want to freeze dry in larger batches between defrost. The vacuum pump (an Edwards RV12 as standard or an Edwards nXDS15i dry scroll pump if preferred) is integral and easily accessible for maintenance. Like the benchtop freeze dryer, the LyoDry Midi is modular: this means that you can choose your drying chamber and accessory. Thus it can be used with the standard acrylic chamber and tray accessory, just like the benchtop freeze dryer. But if you're really looking to scale up your drying capacity, then the LSCC10 10-tray drying chamber is designed for use with the LyoDry Midi and offers ample volume. LSCC10 has 10 trays, each individual tray measuring 450 mm x 345 mm x 30 mm, giving a total drying area of 1.5m². Available unheated as standard, one option is heating to 60°C. Another option is a manifold valve attachment for flask drying fitted to the side of the chamber. If the LyoDry Midi with LSCC10 chamber sounds appealing but you also need data logging, analysis, pressure control, USB and ethernet connections, then the LyoDry Midi Pro includes this added functionality. Other advantages of the LyoDry Midi Pro include colour touch screen control and, if used with a heated chamber, pre-programmable freeze drying recipes can be used, simplifying the whole process even further. LyoDry Midi and LyoDry Midi Pro are lab scale freeze dryers with the potential for pilot scale freeze drying more economically. • Measuring Hydrogen in Molten Aluminium to avoid Porosity in Aluminium Casting

Measuring hydrogen in molten aluminium is essential to avoid porosity in castings. When aluminium alloys are in the liquid state, they absorb hydrogen. If this hydrogen is not removed, it can cause porosity in the casting. Porosity is a defect in aluminum casting that can cause a number of problems, including: Reduced strength and durability Increased susceptibility to corrosion Reduced machinability Increased weight Visual defects Hydrogen in molten aluminium and its alloys derive principally from the aluminium – water reaction: 2Al + 3H₂O 4 Al₂O₃ + 3H₂ . Water vapor is a major source of porosity in aluminum castings. It can come from the atmosphere, products of combustion, hygroscopic degassing or fluxing materials, reactive materials in the melt, and hydrated corrosion products on feed material. The hydrogen formed is absorbed by the liquid aluminium and unless most of it is removed by degassing techniques, porosity will be observed in the casting. So, an accurate measurement of hydrogen in the melt before casting is essential to ensure that degassing operations achieve the specified quality acceptance value. This measurement is available on the foundry shop floor, using Hyscan II Hydrogen in Aluminium Analyser, UK manufactured and supported, by MechaTech Systems Ltd. Hyscan II is a hydrogen analyser that measures hydrogen during aluminum alloy processing operations. It uses a quantitative reduced pressure technique to provide the operator with a quantitative measurement of hydrogen in the melt within five minutes of sampling. Hyscan II is a robust and designed specifically for use on the shop floor. It is rugged and easy to operate, and it provides accurate results with less than 5% difference between that of the vacuum sub-fusion method. Hyscan II can be used for a variety of purposes, including quality control, process investigation, and the evaluation of melt treatments. By monitoring hydrogen levels during the casting process, Hyscan II can help to identify potential problems and prevent defects, leading to lower scrap rates, reduced energy and labour costs, and improved product quality. The financial savings from using Hyscan II can be enough to offset the cost of the instrument within one year. Hyscan II is a global leader in the measurement of porosity in aluminum castings. Its proven method and accuracy have made it a trusted tool for production foundries around the world. • Vacuum Degassing System with portability

As High Vacuum Systems specialists, one of our core products is a portable vacuum degassing system, used on oilfields across the globe, to remove air and other gases from drilling fluids, and also for other applications where degassed oil (or an alternative media) is needed. The MechaTech Systems Oil Filling/Degassing Rig comprises a mobile, trolley mounted, glass oil reservoir with fluid and vacuum pumps, and a control panel with vacuum, fluid and temperature instrumentation. During the degassing cycle, the fluid pump continually circulates oil through an in-line filter, heater block and spreader plate, back into the reservoir. Throughout this cycle the chamber is evacuated using the onboard vacuum pump. Temperature and pressure are monitored via gauges mounted on the control panel. During the tool fill cycle, the operator evacuates the tool, then diverts the flow of oil to fill the tool. Oil returning from the tool is passed back into the reservoir. An indicator on the control panel, when illuminated, warns the operator of the need to replace the filter. The trolley is fully portable, fitted with swivel wheels on the front. MechaTech Systems are specialists in the design, manufacture and maintainance of standard and customised vacuum degassing systems for small batch and bulk media types, manual or automated. Customers include international blue chip oilfield service providers, nanotechnology R&D companies, optical, electrical components, pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturers etc both in the UK and internationally. • Season's Greetings, the 2022 review (and Christmas Opening Hours)!

Season's Greetings from all of the team at MechaTech Systems! Here's a brief overview of our very busy 2022, and our Opening hours over Christmas. January began with our very first export to Zimbabwe. The Chinhoyi University of Technology received the LyoDry Compact benchtop freeze dryer, for freeze drying plant and animal based food samples in their food science laboratory. Since January LyoDry freeze dryers - lab scale, pilot and production scale - have arrived at universities, government research institutes, pharmaceutical manufacturers and food reseach companies throught the UK and overseas. We've also continued to hire used benchtop freeze dryers to a number of business start-ups and research centres to carry out their own freeze drying trials. Hyscan II Hydrogen in Aluminium Analysers have shipped to automotive foundries and aluminium research customers in the UK and China, providing the quanititative measurement of hydrogen in aluminium within just five minutes of sampling. Our continuing work with nuclear decommissioning sites in the UK and overseas has included conducting trials for vacuum drying simulant nuclear waste to ascertain the suitability of the Advanced Vacuum Drying System (AVDS). We attended the NDA Group Supply Chain Event in July to showcase the AVDS, where we discussed the benefits of vacuum drying wet waste, making it suitable for transportation and long term storage. Existing AVDS machines continue to condition intermediate level nuclear waste at UK decommissioning sites, serviced and upgraded by our engineers throughout 2022. As manufacturers of High Vacuum equipment and Freeze Dryers, both components and accessories, are in constant demand, whether it's an O ring, a T-piece, vacuum pump oil or a freeze dryer chamber requirement. Supply chain delays and unprecedented price increases have been a problem for many during 2022. We reacted by increasing our stocks in a bid to avoid delays and maintain competitive pricing for our customers. Our Service Department has seen continued growth this year. The maintenance and repair of vacuum pumps, vacuum systems (vacuum degassers, vacuum drying systems, Hyscan II etc) freeze dryers and scientific instruments has become increasingly important to our customers, to keep their existing equipment working efficiently. As always, we work to the stringent quality management, health and safety and environmental standards demanded by our customer base. We are delighted to receive excellent feedback. As if all of the above wasn't enough, we have also been conducting R&D and working on product development, to enhance, innovate and incorporate the very latest vacuum and freeze drying technology into our product range. We celebrated with a well deserved Christmas Dinner recently at local Thornbury restaurant, Ronnie's. It was truly excellent and enjoyed by all. If you're in the area and looking for oustanding cuisine and service, we highly recommend Ronnie's! Finally, we sincerely thank all of our customers, distributors, suppliers, staff and subcontractors, for contributing to the continued success of MechaTech Systems Ltd. Our offices close for the festive period on 23rd December, re-opening on 3rd January 2023. We wish you all a restful, very Merry Christmas and a successful and Happy New Year - we look forward to working with you in 2023!

  • Which Freeze Dryer Chamber is best for your Laboratory Freeze Dryer?

As LyoDry Freeze Dryers manufacturers, MechaTech Systems also supply a large range of freeze dryer accessories - chambers, trays, spin freezers etc - and spare parts which are suitable for use with LyoDry Laboratory freeze dryers. Wondering which is best for your freeze drying application? Read on...! LyoDry 'Laboratory Freeze Dryers' includes our Benchtop range and also our Midi range. LyoDry laboratory freeze dryers were designed to directly replace the (now obsolete) Edwards Modulyo and Supermodulyo range. Therefore, our freeze dryer accessories and spares are usually compatible with these freeze dryers too (if you're unsure, we will be pleased to check this for you). Our most popular drying chamber accessory is the Acrylic Chamber and 6-Tray Drying Rack with removable trays, which enables freeze drying of multiple samples in a single cycle. The acrylic chamber directly replaces the obsolete Edwards chamber (part number F056-52-000). Need to add heat? Our Heated Tray Drying Accessory includes the acrylic chamber, tray accessory, heater mats and temperature controller (0°C – 60°C). If you need more flexibility, with the ability to freeze dry in flasks as well as bulk samples, the Acrylic Chamber with 8-port lid can be coupled with the tray accessory mentioned above. Each of the 8 ports is fitted with a neoprene valve, 3/4" ID, suitable for flasks of up to 1 litre capacity. We also offer this chamber with a stainless steel chamber if preferred. Or if you are only freeze drying in flasks, the 24-port column manifold in stainless steel is compatible both with LyoDry Benchtop and Midi freeze dryers and also Modulyo and Supermodulyo models. It is supplied complete with 24 neoprene valves, each of which are 3/4" ID, and suitable for flasks of up to 1 litre capacity We also supply the neoprene valves individually too, along with B19, B24 and B29 rubber adaptors (which connect the valve to the manifold). If you already have an Edwards column manifold or drum manifold and just need replacement valves, these are compatible too, directly replacing the old Edwards part number, F056-48-000. For freeze drying in ampoules, we supply Spin Freezers and Secondary Drying Manifolds , either with your new LyoDry Benchtop or Midi freeze dryer, or as replacements to suit your Edwards Modulyo or Supermodulyo. The Spin Freezer employs evaporative cooling and centrifugation to freeze samples in a thin layer on one side of each ampule for faster drying, and it's supplied with 5 interchangeable carriers to accommodate ampoules of varying sizes and capacities. The Secondary Drying Manifold is available with either 24, 48 or 96 ports (part number LSDM96) for desorption (secondary drying) of samples in ampoules. We also supply spare adaptor nipples (part number LSAN) in packs of 48 units, for the secondary drying manifold (also compatible with the older Edwards secondary drying manifolds). If greater capacity is required but on a laboratory scale budget (rather than the more expensive pilot scale models), the LyoDry Midi freeze dryer condenser (which replaces the Supermodulyo EF12K condenser) can be used with our 10-tray, stainless steel chamber. This provides up to 1.5m² drying area and is available either unheated or heated, and can also be fitted with a manifold assembly for additional flask drying. This chamber can also be retrofitted to a Supermodulyo. • Buying a Freeze Dryer? Points to Consider…

If you are thinking about purchasing a freeze dryer, either for the first time or as an upgrade to your existing freeze dryer, you may find it helpful to consider the following points. Why freeze dry? Freeze Dryers are used for preserving a wide variety of product types, as diverse as pharmaceutical preparations, foods and beverages, soil samples, flowers and archaeological artefacts. The common objective is the long term preservation of a product without affecting its integrity. Freeze drying (also known as lyophilization) is a form of dehydration. By freezing the product and lowering the pressure, the moisture content of the product is removed. The freeze drying process facilitates preservation of the original shape, colour and properties of the product. Step 1: Freeze drying trials Have you carried out freeze drying trials of your product? Trials will help to determine how your specific product reacts to the freeze-drying process. For example, how long it takes to freeze dry a batch, how much ice your product generates and, importantly, how much it costs in terms of capital equipment and running costs. Trials can be accomplished either by using a company that offers contract freeze-drying, or by hiring equipment and carrying out your own trials. MechaTech Systems offer benchtop freeze dryers for monthly rental. Budget What can you afford? Freeze Dryers are expensive – fact! Prices vary according to equipment quality and manufacturer, but a good quality, 5Kg (ice condenser capacity). -55°C benchtop freeze dryer in the UK, including chamber and vacuum pump is likely to have a starting price over £10,000. For pilot and production scale freeze dryers, prices vary from tens to hundreds of thousand pounds, usually determined by the condenser and chamber size, and temperature and control requirements. Temperature What Condenser Temperature do you need? A freeze dryer typically has a condenser temperature of -50°C as a starting point. This is suitable for many product types, but not all. It depends upon the freezing (eutectic) point of your product. For example, if your product has a freezing point of -20°C, then a -50°C condenser temperature is fine, but if your product has a freezing point of -70°C, then you would need a condenser temperature of -85°C. MechaTech Systems offer freeze dryers with condenser temperatures of either -55 °C or -85°C. What Chamber Temperature do you need? Many small lab freeze dryers, such as Benchtop Freeze Dryers and the larger Midi Freeze Dryers, are modular: this means that you can choose the drying chamber – often an acrylic chamber, perhaps with a tray accessory – or a manifold or chamber with ports for flask drying. In this instance, pre-freezing in the chamber is not an option, so your product must be pre-frozen either in an external freezer, or snap frozen in liquid nitrogen. Heating your product, if appropriate, may speed up the freeze-drying process. For this purpose, the LSAD6H Heated Chamber from MechaTech Systems has a temperature controller and heater mats. Larger, pilot and production scale freeze dryers, such as the LyoDry Maxi, LyoDry Heritage or the LyoDry Grande include integral, temperature-controlled chambers or shelves. You can both pre-freeze and heat the product. MechaTech’s chamber freeze dryers are typically available with chamber temperatures ranging from -60°C or -40°C,  to +60°C. Capacity What Condenser Capacity do you need? A given condenser capacity refers to the ice capacity of the freeze dryer condenser per batch, before defrost is required. This is determined by how much moisture is in your original product, which converts to ice during the freeze drying process. This is particularly important if you have a very wet product, which is likely to generate more ice. For example, the LyoDry Compact benchtop freeze dryer has an ice condenser capacity of 5Kg, before defrost is required. The LHS60 LyoDry Heritage has an ice condenser capacity of 60Kg before defrost is required. If you don’t know how much ice your product will generate, trials will help you to determine this. What Chamber capacity do you need? i.e. How much space do you need for the product you wish to freeze dry per batch. Smaller, R&D freeze dryers, such as the LyoDry Compact, are often modular, so you can choose which chamber/drying accessory you need. This might be an Acrylic Chamber, for bulk samples, often with a tray accessory, for freeze drying multiple samples. Or a manifold accessory, for attaching flasks. Or a combination of both so that you have different options available, for example the LSDCV 8-port lidded acrylic chamber. See Freeze Dryer Accessories for LyoDry Freeze Dryer accessory options. Pilot scale and production freeze dryers usually have an integral chamber, with a set number of shelves offering a total chamber capacity. For example, the pilot-scale LyoDry Maxi Freeze Dryer is available with either 3, 4 or 5 shelves, each measuring 360mm W x 480mm D, up to a total of 0.86m2 drying space. Whereas the LSH60 LyoDry Heritage has a chamber housing 5 trays, providing a total of 5.2m² drying space. Solvents What solvents are involved in the process? Usually, the only solvent present in the freeze-drying process is water. In which case, any  chamber is suitable. However, some organic solvents can cause an acrylic chamber to corrode, especially if a high concentration of corrosive solvent is present,. In this instance, a stainless steel chamber is a better option. You may also need to protect the vacuum pump with a chemical trap and sorbent. Control What level of control automation do you need? Entry level, laboratory freeze dryers will usually have a basic digital controller and display, showing temperature, vacuum level and readiness. The operator needs to follow certain steps, such as pressing the ‘Pump On’ button to switch on the vacuum pump, when the freeze dryer display indicates that it has reached the correct pre-cooled temperature. For more closely controlled laboratory freeze drying on a small scale, the LyoDry Benchtop Pro and LyoDry Midi Pro offer touch screen control, data logging, trends, pressure control, USB and ethernet comms. Pilot and production freeze dryers, such as the LyoDry Heritage, Maxi and Grande, have more comprehensive controllers, usually a touch screen PLC, with pre-programmable, freeze drying ‘recipes’ and endpoint determination. These provide product protection and require only minimal operator intervention. They often include process and product temperatures variables, and real-time systems status and fault indicators. They also have comprehensive alarm management systems, and the option of remote view via an external computer. If you’re freeze drying in vials, some pilot and production freeze dryers, such as the LyoDry Maxi and Grande, also offer automatic stoppering of vials. Space and Logistics Last, but not least, where will your freeze dryer be installed? A benchtop freeze dryer can sit on a lab bench, or a purpose-built trolley on castors so that it can be moved around the lab. MechaTech Systems also manufacture the LyoDry Midi modular freeze dryer, which offers a larger condenser capacity (18Kg) than the benchtop freeze dryer (5Kg), but is specially designed be positioned next to a typical laboratory bench. The LyoDry Maxi has a built-in chamber on top, so needs height, but is specially designed to fit through a standard laboratory doorway. The LyoDry Production Freeze Dryer, however, is a through-the-wall design – so only the chamber doorway and operator control are accessible in the clean room, whilst the mechanical parts such as the vacuum pump and condenser are in a separate room. To summarise: Have you carried out trials? What can you afford? What condenser temperature and chamber temperature do you need? What condenser capacity and chamber capacity do you need? What solvents are you using and what is their level of concentration? What level of control do you need? How much space do you have? MechaTech Systems manufacture LyoDry Freeze Dryers, from our Bristol, UK facility. We provide advice, quotations and also practical help in the form of rental benchtop freeze dryers for carrying out trials of your product.
